About Us - Unicusano

About Us

University Niccolò Cusano is a very versatile university offering both traditional face to face lessons at its Campus in Rome and modern e-learning lessons, for degree courses in six areas: Law, Economics, Political Science, Education, Psychology, Engineering.

Students can follow courses in Rome at central UNICUSANO CAMPUS. Here each day there are face to face lessons with a teacher. The University complex, over 16.000 square metres, is situated in a six-hectare park, and is equipped with a 109 room student residence, a restaurant, coffee bar and gym.

Once enrolled in the university, students can follow courses on an online multimedia platform. They can access, through an ordinary pc connected to the internet, all the courses related to their study programme, and thus make best use of the time that dedicate to their studies.

On enrolment they receive a password which allows them 24/7 to follow lessons which are in part video (recordings and video-conferencing) and in part based on power point slides, downloadable materials and self-assessment test. The platform also provides students forums, chat rooms and other facilities for interaction with tutors, teachers and other students. Examinations will be held in oral learning centres in the country concerned alternatively at our central campus in Rome, where the student will receive accommodation free of charge. The university also provides each student with online assistance from personal tutors who follow the student’s progress throughout his or her course of study. The tutors offer help in organisational and administrative matters as well as moral support.
Unicusano is a modern university, in the sense that we offer young people the opportunity to lead normal lives while engaged in a full university education; they can have jobs, practise sports or travel at the same time as they study.
We also feel strongly that the online university alternative is the only one that guarantees the right to study to members of society that would otherwise be excluded – the disabled, those in full-time employment or with family commitments, for example.

The teaching Staff

Teachers at Unicusano are full or associate university professors or researchers. Some of them come from other Italian state universities and others have been selected by open competitive examinations. In addition to our permanent teaching staff, several other important figures in the fields of economics, law and the social sciences are involved in providing educational support on a regular basis.

University Research

Niccolò Cusano is a centre for scientific study devoted to education, medical research and environment-friendly technology.

The University gives wide scope to research activities which are the lifeblood of an academic institution and which are essential to its future development. Ever since its foundation, the university has committed itself to improving its research activities, and has now reached a high level of excellence in the fields of Engineering and Medical Science.

This can be seen in our recent subscription to the EBSCO Data Bank and the opening on campus of research laboratories for engineering and medical science that are equipped with cutting-edge technology. We are also committed to the internationalisation of research, and have created facilities to access research activities at a European and international level, thus making a valuable addition to our standard university research programme.

Research In Engineering
Our new Engineering Faculty Research Laboratory is located on Campus, and is an essential educational tool for our students who wish to pursue a career in engineering. The laboratory facilities can be also accessed on-line by students living in other parts of the country.

Students can use the laboratory as a learning aid or for experiments connected with their degree thesis; a teacher is always present to lend assistance and supervise students’ projects. The laboratory is equipped with machinery for carrying out applied research and the faculty collaborates with industries which are interested in innovation and improving their competitiveness. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities can be used for different research purposes simultaneously, and we are constantly updating them in line with other European research centres and industrial partners.

The University’s objective is to have a laboratory that is capable of breaking new ground in engineering research.

Biomedical Research
Long Q-T Syndrome
The Foundation for Scientific and Medical Research of Niccolò Cusano University is dedicated to medical and diagnostic research into rare diseases and their cure.
Since July 2012 the Foundation has supported and funded research into Long Q-T syndrome at Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome. This syndrome is a genetic arrhythmic heart dysfunction which manifests itself in a lengthening of the Q-T interval (ventricular re-polarisation) on an electrocardiogram, which can lead to arrhythmic states that are potentially life-threatening.
So far a total of fourteen genes have been identified as contributing to the disorder.
The aim of researchers is to modify the genes responsible for LQTS and thus provide a cure for the disease.
The Foundation has set up a medical research centre on the Rome campus, with a laboratory for biomedical research, and has made large-scale investments in human resources and state-of-the-art technology.

The football team of scientific research
The football team of scientific Research The Niccolò Cusano University is the first Italian university which bought a football team: the Unicusano- Fondi football team (the team of the Italian country of Lazio) . After winning the Serie D Italian Cup and the play-off with Fondi, and after achieving important results in the Lega Pro, Niccolò Cusano University’s venture into the world of sport takes a new step forward: the town of Terni and its renowned football team Ternana. The football team joins forces with scientific Research, pressing into service the Italian passion for football to sponsor and champion the important work being carried out by Italian researchers and all those battling daily with voluntary work against disease. Bearing this goal in mind, University started a partnership with one of the most popular sport newspapers in Italy, Il Corriere dello Sport, which dedicated a page to the sport and health Research project of the University. Our collaboration with Il Corriere dello Sport allowed us to tell all kinds of untold stories about both medical advances and also the world of sport and disability. With a great town like Terni, with the great devotion of the Ternana fans and the commitment of Unicusano, the next season looks set to be an exciting and impressive one for sport, education and scientific Research.

National And International Research Projects
Niccolò Cusano University has now an Office for National and International Research Projects, which provides advice, technical assistance, monitoring and assessment for all research projects undertaken by teachers and researchers.
The primary aim of this office is to encourage them to take part in competitive public examinations announced by the Ministry of Education and also those set by the European Union and international organisations.
The Office coordinates, analyses and checks all the information related to such competitions and lends support to the university’s research projects, by compiling programme guides, call for proposals, and the transfer and re-working of data.

Green sustainability

For several years now there have been doubts whether we can unconditionally pursue our technological development and set no limits to our economic growth, and today more than ever, these doubts have become certainties. The world’s natural resources are not inexhaustible and they cannot continue to be misused. The effects of their unlimited use are extremely negative to the point where the future of human life is endangered.
The reduction in the ozone layer, acid rain, the overheating of the planet are emergencies on a global scale that go beyond the concern of any individual country and which are threatening everyone in the world.
Faced with this scenario, industries, companies and governments all over the world, without neglecting their economic purposes and the creation of welfare, are progressively becoming aware of the dangerous impact of their activities on the environment, and are taking steps towards the safeguarding of the ecosystem. Universities, which are the training ground for the future professionals and managers of tomorrow, play an important role in educating people to respect the environment and in encouraging good practices and projects aimed at eco-sustainability. Universities must become ‘laboratories’, where the need to protect the environment leads to opportunities for developing new products, new services and new businesses aimed at genuine sustainability in all its aspects.

Other information

The University Niccolò Cusano (Unicusano), is a non-state public university set up by the Ministry of Education by the Ministerial Decree of May 10, 2006 (G.U. n. 140suppl.N.151 of 19\6\2006).
This new academic institution is the result of a successful merger of the founders’ professional experience with economists, educators, lawyers, political scientists, linguists, computer scientists and researchers who are willing to invest their knowledge in the creation of a new academic institution. Their aim is to combine the typical teaching and research of a traditional university and the ever – growing capability of information technology to educate and train students and carry out innovative research.
The University can count on the knowledge, know-how and teaching skills of professors from many prestigious Italian and European universities, who have obtained high academic honours and whose important scientific and educational achievements have been widely recognised. These professors have decided to transfer their experience and their knowledge to the field of distance learning and research in order to create educational choices comparable to those of traditional universities. Using information science, we can eliminate the real-time obstacles that are a limiting feature of conventional universities and to give the chance of access to higher education to people who would otherwise be excluded. UNICUSANO is based in Rome, but has local learning centers throughout the country; these are important points of reference for all the students enrolled in the university.

If you are interested in our offer, we would be happy to invite you here to show you our Campus.
